Peru has eight natural (or geographical) regions, and all eight regions are represented in the Peru Lima East Mission.

Chala region is the coastal area along the Pacific Ocean. It is subtropical dry and tropical savana. Lima is in the Chala region:

Yungas region has an altitude of 1,600 to 5,000 feet above sea level. It includes the forest along the eastern slopes of the Andes mountains, with an extremely diverse climate, flora, and fauna.  he will travel through this region during his trips from Lima to Tarma:
Quechua region, altitude 7,500 to 11,500 feet, includes big valleys divided by rivers.

The second largest city in his mission, Huancayo, is in this region. Cusco and  Machu Picchu (not in his mission) are also in this reagion.

Suni region, 11,500 to 13,500 feet, is dry and cold. Cities in our mission in this region and that we have visited, include La Oroya (where we went most Saturdays while living in Tarma), Huancavelica, San Pedro de Cajas, and others. This picture shows the Suni region near the town of San Pedro de Cajas:

Puna region, 10,500 feet to 14,800 feet, includes the altiplanos or pampas (vast high plains), where puna grass grows. The two cities in our mission in the Puna region are Cerro de Pasco and Junín (where we went most Saturdays). This picture shows the Puna region, with wild vicuña, between San Pedro de Cajas and Junín.

Junca region includes the jagged, snow-covered mountains above 13,500 feet. This picture was taken near Ticlio, the mountain pass (at 15,800 feet) that we traveled through in going from Lima to Tarma:

Rupa region, 1,600 to 2,300 feet, is the high jungle areas on the eastern side of the Andes Mountains. The city of La Merced in our mission (and where we attended a Multi-zone Conference) is located in the Rupa region. This picture was taken after our mission when we visited Tarapoto:

Omagua region is the low (below 1300 feet) jungle. The town of Satipo in our mission is located in the Omagua region. We visited Iquitos, on the Amazon River, after our mission, and Scott took this picture when we visited the Amazon jungle.

The Peru Lima East Mission is an extremely geographically diverse mission, with probably the biggest elevation changes of any mission in the world.

Lima MTC welcome letter

CENTRO DE CAPACITACIÓN MISIONAL
Melgarejo 159, La Molina, Lima 12, Perú
Teléf.: 349-4282/349-4251/349-4250

                                                                                                                             La Molina, February 21, 2013

Dear Boxberger, Mckay Raymond

The Lima Peru Missionary Training Center (MTC) is located in the La Molina District of Lima. Missionaries from Spanish speaking countries who will serve in Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador receive two weeks of training along with native Peruvian missionaries who are waiting for visas to enter other countries.  Also native English speaking missionaries arrive directly for 6 weeks of training.  The teachers are recently returned native speaking missionaries who are well versed in the Gospel of Jesus Christ, Preach My Gospel and the Eight Fundamentals.  Each missionary will have many practice teaching opportunities to help him learn how to recognize and teach by the Spirit and to ask inspired questions in order to fulfill the missionary objective of inviting others to come unto Christ.  It is a time of great spiritual growth, intense training as well as accelerated Spanish learning for those learning the language. As much as possible, a native English speaking missionary will have room assignments with native Spanish speaking missionaries with the intent that to increase his Spanish speaking ability.  In addition to the classroom instruction, there will be opportunities to have infield proseliting and activation experiences.

A great preparation for the MTC experience is a consistent study program of the scriptures,Preach My Gospel as well as exchanges with the full time missionaries. Because the Book of Mormon is the keystone of our religion, we encourage each missionary to read the entire Book of Mormon and personally apply the promise in Moroni 10:4-5 before arriving at the MTC.

The following will be helpful to remember:
1.       Bring current email address to communicate with your family and US stamps if you will send letters through the pouch.  To mail items, the Peruvian mail, Serpost, can also be used but it is inconvenient and not reliable. Because of the cost and time to receive packages, we discourage family and friends from sending them to the Peru MTC.
2.       Bring all clothing and supplies listed in your call packet.
3.       Wherever possible be endowed before you arrive and bring your recommend.
4.       Money brought to the MTC should be American dollars or Peruvian Nuevo Soles.
5.       If used, credit/debit cards should be approved for international charges

Lima is a very modern city and almost anything you need can be purchased here at prices comparable to US prices.  The Peru MTC campus is beautiful and the weather is great.

The Peru MTC experience is unique. We anxiously await your arrival.  The Lord will bless you and your family as you faithfully serve in this great cause.

Sincerely,

President                                                                                President´s wife
Lima Peru MTC                                                                      Lima Peru MTC

On preparation days missionaries can email their family, so make sure to bring a current email address for your family.  Serpost, the regular Peruvian mail, can be used to send regular mail items, but it is very inconvenient.   Missionaries can send letters to the United States via the “pouch”, but the letters require an appropriate US stamp and we do not have nor sell US stamps.  Because of cost and time, we encourage family and friends NOT to send packages to the Peru MTC. Also, missionaries may attend the temple on preparation days, but it should be noted that those who arrive without being endowed must be prepared to wait up to one week before going to the temple.  All missionaries arriving at the Peru MTC should bring their money in Peruvian Nuevo Soles or American dollars. If a debit or credit card will be used, make sure it is approved for international charges and is from a well known international card company.

Mckay's first p-day at the Provo MTC

Boxberger Family!

Hey hows it going familia?  I'm washing clothes by myself again. I love my first p-day!   How's the family, I making sure this makes it out to your inbox in case you didn't get my mail the first time.  How's dad, are his shifts still wearing him out?
Please know that I love every single one of you and I hope Mason and Kenny are considering about taking a mission, they'll never regret it.  Read the preach my gospel over and over and over without faint, it will help you tons!  I admit though that the last few days were pretty rough and overwhelming.
I'll emphisize that they certainly call it missionary work for a reason.  But I'm fine now I took a temple session and really felt that I am able to do hard things.
All I can say is be prepared I say it once more BE PREPARED!  Mentally and Phisically as well as spritually.
Love,
Elder Boxberger
